North Adriatic or Kvarner Bay is dominated by the islands Krk, Cres and Losinj, the 3 islands we will visit on our holiday. Although less known then their southern neighbors, the northern Adriatic islands offer an unforgettable walking holiday. Away from the main tourist areas, we will walk through the evergreen forests of Losinj island, opposed by karstic plateaus on Krk island. We will climb the highest peaks of Losinj and Krk and meet the northeastern Cres, where the continental climate from the coast created a flora quite unusual for the Mediterranean. We will also hear about the Croatian written history, of which one of the most valuable findings was found on Krk Island and enjoy a swim on one of the best known beaches on northern Adriatic – at Baska town.
Location: Krk, Cres, Losinj
3 Hours Before Flight Time
Number of days walking: 6
Average daily distance: 12 km / 7,5 miles
Terrain: medium altitude differences (up to 600m); trails passing green forrests but also rocky limestone areas
Weather & seasonality
Islands of North Adraitic are often as sunny as their souther neighbours – when combined with the wide and open limestone areas, the temperatures can get quite high – 20-25 ˙C in spring/autumn up to 30˙C in summertime. On the other hand, the vicinity of Croatia’s greatest mountain Velebit can bring sudden outbursts of strong wind „bura“, bringing fresh air and often rainy weather.. For this reason, we recommend all the hikers to be well equipped for sun and rain.
Arrival to Zagreb airport and transfer to the island of Losinj.
A leisurely walking tour to the southeast point of the island. The walk follows the coastal line, through a dense pine forest, enjoying the green-blue bays along the trail.
Walking tour to Osorscica mountain (589m) – the highest mountain of Losinj island, with very nice views of the surrounding islands and coast. We will visit the medieval town of Osor and then transfer to Cres town.
Rest day – boat excursion from Cres port to the Blue Cave of Cres island, close to the unusual Lubenice village. Picnic on board. Possibilities for a walking tour to Lubenice and back to the boat (altitude difference about 380m).
Transfer from Cres to Porozina village, at the north-west end of the island of Cres. A walk towards the miniscule town of Beli, passing through the so called “Tramuntana paths”, surrounded by oak and chestnut forests and abandoned villages. Transfer to the island of Krk.
A walk to the highest peak of the island – Obzova peak. At 568m and situated on a fascinating karst plateau it offers a great view on the surrounding area and islands.
A walk at the southeast part of the island of Krk. Climb to the peak of Hlam (461 m), passing through the ‘Moon Plateau’ – a scenic plateau with moon-like rocks, situated at an altitude of around 330m.
